Are you expecting house guests this summer? Preparing a guest room for visitors is all about creating a warm, inviting space that welcomes your family and friends into your home, while also providing privacy. Making a guest room feel like home doesn’t have to be a difficult, expensive undertaking. It comes down to a handful of tips that will make the room feel personal and comforting

Here’s 5 easy ways to spruce up your guest room.

1. De-Clutter, Clean, Air Out the Room

For most people, the guest room serves multiple purposes. Not only is it a guest room, but it usually stores unused items or doubles as an office. However, there’s a lot to be said for less furniture, less random items, and more unity. Begin by opening the windows to let in some fresh air and sun. Give the  room a good dusting and vacuuming. If there is adequate space in the room, provide a comfy chair for reading, relaxing, or easily putting on shoes.

2. Make the Space Comforting

Even if, or especially if you are keeping your guest busy, they will need a private space to retreat to at the end of the day. The more comforting that you make it, the better that they will sleep in the room. You’ll want to make sure that the sheets are soft, while the rest of the bedding is appropriate for the weather. The cooler it is, the more blankets that you should make available for your guests. In most cases, a sheet and a comforter are enough, but sometimes your guest may want some extra blankets especially in the winter season. For rooms with hardwood or tile floors, having a rug near the bed keeps them from stepping onto cold, shocking floors if and when they need to get up. Lastly, adding decorative touches like pillows, artwork, or pictures can make them feel invited into the space.

3. Provide Some Basic Toiletry Items

If you want to make your guests feel extra special, making them a small welcome basket with basic toiletries available for them to use can be a great gesture, especially in case they forgot something. Having travel sized items available for their use whether in the room or in the bathroom can make them feel truly invited. Adding in fresh flowers or even small personal gifts can make a big difference too. Finally, making sure they have washcloths and towels available for their use in the bathroom is a must.

4. Create a Vanity Area

For many, the guest bathroom just doesn’t provide the space needed for comfortably getting ready in the morning. You can easily create this in the guest bedroom with a small writing desk or other similar table for a quick vanity to apply makeup or lay out their clothes for the day. It’s a small, simple touches like this that make the space feel a little more like home for them.

5. Add Personal Touches

HGTV’s Joanna Gaines often mentioned on her show that the personal touches are what make a space feel like home. One of the things that she struggled with the most was making minimalist, modern homes still have those personal touches, but she seems to nail it every time. It comes down to things like the photos of fun memories, soft warm lighting in the space, soft but subtle fragrances, and a selection of comforting reading. The reading can be some of your favorite books, recent magazines, or even local travel guides. The point is to make it feel like something they would likely do for their own home.
