Martha Jane Hewitt Morris, age 76, of Charlotte, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Hillcrest Healthcare Center in Ashland City, Tennessee. She was born on March 1, 1949, in Villa Rica, Carroll County, Georgia, to Jesse Cleve Hewitt and Edna Mae Marks Hewitt.
Growing up on a cotton farm she learned the value of hard work and appreciation for country living. Upon graduating from high school, she moved to Atlanta to attend Piedmont Nursing School where she received her Registered Nursing degree and met the love of her life, Paul Morris. After finishing college, the two were married on August 1, 1970, and moved to Nashville, Tennessee. They had 2 children, Meredith and Brent.
Martha enjoyed her career as a nurse. She worked in various settings from nightshift in the ICU to the women’s correctional facility. She found her home working in the office alongside Dr. Ben Alper for many years. There she met coworkers that became lifelong friends. As her children got older, Martha moved away from nursing to focus on their activities. It was not unusual for her to make 2 or 3 trips a day up and down River Road serving as chauffeur for various school and extracurricular activities.
She was active in PTO and was a well-known “videographer” at NCS, recording many football and basketball games and other events. She later enjoyed supporting and cheering on her five grandchildren in their activities.
Martha was a creative seamstress and fashioned everything including boxer shorts, Halloween costumes, formal wear, and anything else her family could imagine. She did not back down from sewing challenge and could patch that favorite pair of jeans a dozen times. She was also a gifted musician, learning to play piano with only a few lessons as a girl. During her teenage years, she served as organist at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Villa Rica. She later served the Mt. Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church as organist for several years.
Martha enjoyed getting dressed up and rubbing elbows with celebrities and CMA executives, but she was most at home on the farm. She might be found mowing the yard, bush hogging, feeding cows, sometimes fishing by the pond. She took pride in knowing each cow and calf.
In her later years she turned toward activities she could do from indoors and became an avid bird-watcher. Martha was very plain-spoken, often blunt. One never had to wonder what she was thinking. Underneath all of the sass she was loving and generous, always willing to volunteer or donate to a special cause.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul Morris; parents, Jesse and Edna Hewitt; and sister, Mary Corn. She is survived by her son, Brent Morris (Rachel); daughter, Meredith Bone (Wade); nephews, Jay Morris (Celeste) and Scott Corn (Mary); and grandchildren, Allison Bone, Zach Bone (Lennon), Drew Morris, Kendall Morris, and Jack Morris.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 11am in the Chapel of Cheatham County Funeral Home with Sister Patricia Shropshire officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Liberty Presbyterian Cemetery in Charlotte, Tennessee. Visitation will be Monday, July 28, 2025, from 3pm to 7pm and Tuesday, July 29, 2025, from 9am until the service hour of 11am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The family would like to thank the staff at Hillcrest (Riverview) Healthcare for their care for the past 2 years. They loved on her and became part of Martha’s family.
