Fifth-generation owners David and Ellen Levy cited health considerations and the upcoming lease renewal in making the difficult decision. The Green Hills store, located at 3900 Hillsboro Pike, #36, will officially close in late December. Until then, Levy’s will remain open and continue serving customers as usual.
“When I look back at our history, I can’t help but be proud,” said David Levy, president of Levy’s in a release. “While the decision to close is bittersweet, I am grateful for our incredible staff, whose attention to detail is unmatched, and for our customers who have given us the privilege of dressing their families for generations.”
Levy also expressed his appreciation for the vendors, his wife Ellen, sister-in-law Robin Rose, siblings Ralph and Gail, and the store’s dedicated associates, all of whom have helped carry the family business forward. “I am humbled by the store’s success—a rarity in retail that still bears my family name—and I look forward to celebrating with Nashville over the next few months,” he said.
Founded before the Civil War, Levy’s opened its doors on Market Street in downtown Nashville in 1855. Over the decades, the business weathered the Great Depression, the Great Recession and the dramatic rise of e-commerce before moving to its current Green Hills location in 1978. David Levy took the helm of the business founded by his great-great-grandfather in August 1998, becoming the fifth generation of the family to lead the store.
Throughout its history, Levy’s has been known for luxury men’s and women’s apparel and accessories, offering carefully selected collections from high-end labels around the world. Its experienced wardrobe consultants have provided personalized shopping and image consulting, while its in-house tailoring department has remained central to the Levy’s experience.
The store’s team of tailors and seamstresses has provided artisanal alterations, repairs and fully custom garments, continuing a tradition of craftsmanship that has been a hallmark of the business for generations.
Levy’s success has been rooted not only in luxury clothing but also in the Southern hospitality and exceptional customer service that have defined the store since its founding.
Customers are invited to visit Levy’s in the coming months and share their favorite memories—from purchasing a first suit for a new job to finding the perfect tuxedo for a wedding day.
September will mark the final “Custom Month,” giving clients one last opportunity to experience Levy’s custom tailoring services with special discounts.
“I know I won’t be able to walk away from 49 years of friendships, but I look forward to more time spent with my family,” Levy said. “We’d love to hear your story. Stop by the store or email us at customerservice@levysclothes.com to share your most memorable experiences shopping at Levy’s.”
After nearly 170 years of serving Nashville and Middle Tennessee, Levy’s will spend its final months celebrating the customers, employees, families and community that have made its story possible.
