Ashland City author Lisa Wysocky took home top honors for her young adult book, The Mysterious Horse House, at the 2022 American Horse Publicans awards, held in Lexington, Kentucky on May 14. The awards honor all forms of horse media, including books, podcasts, photography, and articles, and Wysocky’s fiction adventure won Best Horse-related Book.

No stranger to awards, this is the third time in nine years that one of Wysocky’s books has taken home the top prize. The other two wins were for books in her Cat Enright cozy equestrian mystery series, which has been optioned for film/tv. Still, the win this year was a surprise.

“This year’s awards ran fiction and non-fiction together, and it is hard for those two kinds of books to compete against each other,” Wysocky said. “I was so thrilled when The Mysterious Horse House won because this was my first effort at young adult fiction.”

The book centers around 11-year-old Keela, who lives with her Uncle Sir and Aunt Mrs. in an odd house built into a cliff. Her life is quite boring since no one ever comes to visit. So, when tiny, mysterious, dancing lights lead her to a secret tunnel, and a talking pony shows up in the barn, Keela soon finds herself on the adventure of a lifetime.

“While I wrote the book for teens, it has been finding a home with adult readers, too,” Wysocky added.

Judges’ comments included: “With such a wide array of books, I read, made notes, and then ruminated on each one. Which ones did I find myself thinking about or talking about with my friends, family, and co-workers? That engagement is what brought The Mysterious Horse House to the top of the class. The story line was unique and engaging. It was well written with good dialogue, and it was the kind of book I would give a young adult, horse-loving bibliophile.”

Lisa Wysocky is also the executive director of Colby’s Army, a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic riding and other equine-assisted programming, along with homeless services.

The Mysterious Horse House is available in paperback and Kindle formats.
