A 3-year-old boy died Tuesday after he was found inside a broken-down van at a home in Pegram, according to WSMV.
Investigators believe the child got into the van on his own but was unable to get back out.
The boy was reported missing around 1 p.m. after the adult family member watching him and his siblings woke up from a nap and could not find him. Before deputies arrived, one of the child’s young siblings found him shortly after 4 p.m. inside the van on the property.
A cause of death has not been released, but investigators said the extreme heat is a factor in the investigation.
The National Weather Service had issued a heat advisory for Cheatham County and surrounding areas Tuesday, warning the heat index could reach 109 degrees.
The investigation remains ongoing.
