Gary Wayne Cotton
October 25, 1952 – May 10, 2026
Gary Wayne Cotton, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, songwriter, and friend, passed away on May 10, 2026. He was 73 years old.
Born in El Paso, Gary later found his true home in Nashville, where he spent nearly forty years doing what he loved most – writing and sharing music. A respected songwriter and performer, Gary was known throughout the Nashville songwriting community for his heartfelt storytelling, humility, and deep love of music.
Gary wrote songs recorded by artists including Alan Jackson, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Restless Heart, and David Ball. He also loved performing his own songs, sharing stories and laughter with audiences and fellow songwriters alike. His voice – often described as a blend of John Denver, James Taylor, and unmistakably himself – was truly a gift to all who heard it.
Beyond music, Gary was a man who loved life’s simple joys. He enjoyed fishing, playing poker, and losing himself in a good book. He had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor that made time spent with him unforgettable. A fan of video gaming, he especially loved playing alongside his grandchildren and son-in-law – time that brought him tremendous joy.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, including his beloved June, and sister Sissy.
He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Deb; his daughters Lisa (sons Taylor and Beckett), Amy (daughter Aurora), and Bethany (husband Andy and daughter Brooklynn); and his brothers Roy (wife Karen), Rodger, Paul, and Richard Hamilton. He was also deeply loved by his extended family, especially his nieces, for whom he was a steady source of love, humor, and support.
A celebration of life will be announced in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gary’s honor to MusiCares.
Gary will be remembered for the music he shared, the stories he told, the laughter he brought into every room, and the deep love he had for his family. His legacy lives on in the songs he wrote and the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
