The 84-year-old retired physician was reportedly found face down near the swimming pool at his condo on Friday, Aug. 7. A resident alerted building staff, who found Witherspoon conscious before he was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Nashville Metro confirmed that emergency responders were called to a medical incident at the property but did not publicly identify the patient.
Reese Witherspoon later addressed reports about her father on Instagram, telling followers that he was doing well and thanking people for their concern.
“Earlier today, several outlets reported that my dad was taken to the hospital after a fall,” Witherspoon shared, adding that he was “fine now” and receiving good medical care.
On Monday, Aug. 10, Page Six reported that Dr. Witherspoon had been released from the hospital Sunday and returned to his Nashville home after the two-night stay.
Dr. John Draper Witherspoon is a retired ear, nose and throat surgeon and previously served as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. Reese Witherspoon has longstanding ties to Nashville and spent much of her childhood in Tennessee.
