Patrick Smith was sworn in as Ashland City’s new municipal judge during a ceremony on Tuesday night. Cheatham County General Sessions Judge Phil Maxey administered the oath of office.

Smith takes over the role following the passing of longtime Judge Bill Stinnett in January at the age of 95. Stinnett had served as the town’s judge since August 1996 and became its only elected judge in August 1998. Before his tenure on the bench, he also served as Ashland City’s attorney.

The City Council voted in March to appoint Smith to complete the remainder of Stinnett’s term, which extends until 2030. An attorney by profession, Smith previously served as the Cheatham County Register of Deeds from 2014 to 2022 and was also a member of the City Council.

With his swearing-in, Smith now steps into a role shaped by decades of dedicated service from his predecessor. City officials and residents congratulated him on the appointment, expressing confidence in his ability to uphold the law and serve the community.
