During the pandemic, interest in second-hand shopping, now called “shopping re-commerce,” became more accepted due to so many shortages. That interest has only grown in the last few years. Part of it is inflation, but there is much more to the trend. Buying resale, vintage, antique and up-cycled goods as gifts offers many pluses.
Not only does shopping re-commerced items allow money to go further, but it also extends the life of used items, stimulates the economy, lowers the carbon footprint by keeping things out of the landfill, and best of all, it allows self-expression because resale, vintage, antique and up-cycled items are one-of-a-kind. Re-commerced gifts can be as unique as the person receiving the gift. Also, items made in the past are of better quality than today’s fast décor and fast fashion.
Secondhand is no longer a murky term that makes one think of musty stores with poor fluorescent lighting, linoleum floors and questionable cast-offs. Many of today’s second-hand stores are filled with luxury items displayed in a high-end atmosphere.
